Arrive in Spoleto, the ancient capital of the Lombard dukes that thanks to the wealth of historical and artistic heritage offers a lot to visitors. Guided tour of its historic center starting from the Piazza della Libertà, with the Roman theater, the Arch of Druso, S. Ansano, market square and the town hall; Piazza del Duomo and the archbishop’s palace. Lunch in a restaurant.
In the afternoon departure for Trevi, surrounded by olive trees, with Roman remains, such as the mighty walls (I century BC) that surround the town, and medieval remains as the door of Bruscito, Porta del Cieco, Porta San Fabiano and the arch of Mostaccio give place to a particularly charming atmosphere. Visit the pretty town; the heart of the historic center is Piazza Mazzini, closed at the corner by the Town Hall of the thirteenth century with the civic tower. Not to miss the Clitunno Theatre, with a beautiful curtain painted by Domenico Bruschi inside, the church of San Giovanni Decollato, in Neoclassical style, and Casa Petrucci elegant Renaissance building, The Church of San Francesco, of the fourteenth century, in Gothic style. Breakfast in the hotel visit the city symbol of peace, which is identified with one of the most beloved and revered saints in the world, Saint Francis of Assisi, and is at the same time a delightful medieval town full of characteristic corners and typical cuisine. Full day dedicated to guided tours to discover the routes and stages made by the Saint. Lunch in a restaurant. Accurate visit of the Basilica of Assisi which consists of two superimposed churches and a crypt with the tomb of the Saint. In the Upper Church you can admire the cycle of the life of St. Francis, the work of the great Giotto, the Stories of the Old and the New Testament that cover the entire nave and other beautiful frescoes by Cimabue and Torriti. Another character who has deeply marked these places is Santa Chiara to whom is dedicated the homonymous Basilica with the facade made of white and pink stone and divided into three sections by horizontal frames. Interesting interior frescoes and the remains of the Saint visible in the crypt through a window. Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight.
Breakfast at the hotel, transfer of the group to Gubbio defined as “gray city”, for the compact and uniform color of the limestone blocks with which this beautiful village is built. The town is composed by five parallel streets located at different levels and connected by steps, alleys and stairs; it may seem a vaguely “labyrinthine” structure but in reality here it is really difficult to get lost. Guided tour of the historic center with the Piazza Grande, Palazzo dei Consoli and Palazzo Pretorio, the Palazzo Ducale, the Palazzo Bargello where to the left of the large door there is the “Porta del morto”, an architectural element typical of the Umbrian and Marche villages. In the afternoon visit the Basilica of Sant’Ubaldo, much altered over the centuries and now bare, reaching it with the cable car that leads from the center of Gubbio to Mount Ingino where the Basilica is located. In a small “cage” in which enter at most 2 people, you climb for about 500 meters suspended in the void with exceptional panoramic views of the rooftops of Gubbio and the surrounding countryside.
